Just because you feel sad and depressed for a few days does not mean that you have depression. Depression can last for years, it’s a serious illness. Each year about 15 million Americans suffer from this illness. Only about 4.5 million of those people seek help, which is unfortunate. All too often people avoid recognizing or admitting that they suffer from depression because of the negative archetypes associated with mental illnesses. Depression is a progressive illness. It will get worse without treatment. Ignorance in this case isn’t bliss.
A variety of factors, and even combinations of these factors, lead to depression. It can by biological, genetic, physical and emotional. The day to day lives of the victim may even have a role. Detrimental factors such as stress can lead to it. Complicated diseases like depression aren’t easy to crack. We also recognize the intricacy of man’s mind. The medical profession is working steadily in an attempt to study the mind and how it works. A chemical imbalance in the brain causes depression, that’s known. We are learning more every day about how the whole process works. The phrase is “learning is half the battle” and with depression knowledge is power.
Depression can be treated with a host of available medications. Of course the market is full of ‘quick fix’ antidotes. Make sure the treatment has been studied and scientifically proven to address depression. At one time asylums and mental institutions were filled to the brim with mentally ill people. That is a thing of the past, thank goodness. The anti-depressant Prozac first came into use in the USA in 1988. Although it has side effects it is widely used and it is effective.
A new class of anti-depressants has become widely used since then. The SSRI or (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) like Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are all being used to treat depression today. All have been proven effective but come with varied side effects. Herbal medications also have a place in this market. Hyperforin, an ingredient in the St. John Wort extract, is common in those that seem to work as well as anti-depressants. When this is present in the proper quantity it is a winner. When seeking depression medications that work ask questions, do your research, and know the facts.
